Ranbir Kapoor's 'Ramayana' film faces religious costume controversy

The upcoming Indian epic film "Ramayana", starring Ranbir Kapoor and directed by Nitesh Tiwari, has drawn criticism from the Delhi Ramleela Mahasangh. The organization’s president, Arjun Kumar, said the trailer’s costumes and portrayal of the story did not reflect traditional spiritual and emotional tones, and demanded a pre‑screening for Ramleela committees and Hindu religious representatives before theatrical release. The Mahasangh warned it would oppose the film if objections are not addressed.

Actress Surbhi Das, who plays Shurti Kirt, defended the production, stating that public opinion will always be divided over costume choices such as Sita’s modern look and blouse. She urged audiences to wait for the full film to judge the makers’ intent. Costume designers also explained that authentic ancient attire is unavailable, so designs draw on historic paintings and traditional depictions. The film, budgeted at roughly ₹4,000 crore, remains slated for release pending the controversy’s resolution.
