Randstad-ifo study: Error culture hinders innovation in large companies

A Randstad-ifo HR survey conducted in the third quarter of 2026 reveals that 34% of large companies (those with over 500 employees) view their error culture as a barrier to innovation and experimentation. In contrast, only 11% of small businesses (up to 49 employees) report similar concerns.

The study highlights a significant gap in communication: while 62% of small businesses report that errors are discussed openly, only 28% of large companies report the same. However, large companies are more likely to implement organizational changes following a mistake, with 72% adjusting processes, responsibilities, or information compared to 44% of small businesses.

Regarding error detection, 32% of companies rely on internal controls, evaluations, or quality audits. Errors are identified by colleagues or managers in 28% of cases and through external feedback in 19%. Only 18% of companies report that the employees directly affected by an error are the ones who bring it to light. In the industrial sector, the reliance on internal controls is particularly high at 43%, while only 14% of errors are reported by the affected staff.
