Rangpur killings: Police arrest two suspects in Hindu family murders
Authorities in Rangpur, Bangladesh, have arrested two men, 23-year-old Siddhartha Das and 19-year-old Mugdha Das, in connection with the brutal killing of a retired schoolteacher and three family members. Police state the murders were motivated by the teacher’s attempt to prevent the suspects from using yaba, a methamphetamine-based drug, on a rooftop.
However, the human rights organization Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has raised concerns regarding discrepancies between the official police account and information provided by relatives, local residents, and media reports. Following a fact-finding mission, ASK called for a comprehensive and impartial investigation, emphasizing the need for scientific, digital, and forensic analysis to establish the true motive and sequence of events.
The incident has also triggered significant social media activity. Various accounts have circulated claims that the killings were part of a communal targeting of Hindus, though these claims have been contested. Some social media posts have alleged religious motivations behind the violence, while others have questioned the adequacy of the official investigation.
