Rankweil to implement widespread 30 km/h speed limit

The municipality of Rankweil in Vorarlberg, Austria, will implement a widespread 30 km/h speed limit across much of its local area starting at the end of October 2026. This initiative is a central component of a road and path concept approved by the municipal council in April 2022, which was developed through public workshops.

The measure aims to increase traffic safety, particularly for children, the elderly, and pedestrians or cyclists, by reducing braking distances and the severity of potential accidents. Additionally, the municipality expects a reduction in traffic noise and an improvement in overall quality of life. Vice Mayor Johannes Herburger noted that the regulation would also provide more clarity for drivers by creating more consistent speed limits throughout the area.

Major thoroughfares and collector roads, such as Stiegstraße, Bifangstraße, and Merowingerstraße, will be exempt from the new limit. The implementation follows a phased approach, beginning with the Brederis district in April 2023.
