Ransomware attacks affect 45% of German companies

A recent survey by the digital association Bitkom reveals that 45 percent of German companies were targeted by ransomware attacks within the last twelve months. While this represents a decrease from the previous year, when 58 percent of companies reported attacks, the threat remains significant. Among those affected, 25 percent suffered actual damages, while 20 percent reported no consequences.

Data shows that one in five targeted companies has already paid a ransom, with payments frequently reaching five or six-figure sums. Some individual cases have involved transfers of one million euros or more. Experts warn that paying ransoms provides no guarantee of data decryption or confidentiality and serves only to fund future criminal activities.

The ongoing cyberattack on the State of Berlin highlights these risks. The Rhysida group claims to have stolen 5.7 terabytes of data and has demanded a minimum of 30 Bitcoin, approximately two million euros, to prevent its release. The State of Berlin has stated it will not succumb to extortion.
