Ransomware attacks reach record high in Q3 2026
Ransomware attacks reached a record high in the third quarter of 2026, with 2,627 total incidents reported. According to a report from Comparitech, all four key sectors experienced significant increases in attacks compared to the previous quarter. The education sector saw the largest uptick at 50 percent, followed by healthcare (39 percent), government (36 percent), and businesses (27 percent).
Industry-specific data shows that finance and technology experienced the highest growth in attacks, rising by 72 percent and 70 percent respectively. The United States was the most targeted region, accounting for 41 percent of all attacks, which represented a 34 percent increase from Q2 2026. Other notable increases occurred in India, which saw a 116 percent rise, and Argentina, which saw a 150 percent increase.
Cybersecurity research from Rapid7 highlights a narrowing window for defense, noting that attackers are exploiting high-severity vulnerabilities an average of three days after public disclosure. Approximately 71 percent of tracked exploitation occurred within the first seven days of a vulnerability becoming public. Furthermore, 79 percent of the high- and critical-severity vulnerabilities exploited this quarter required no authentication or user interaction.
