Chief Raoni Metuktire receives palliative care after cancer diagnosis
Renowned Brazilian indigenous leader Chief Raoni Metuktire, aged 94, is receiving palliative care at his residence in Peixoto de Azevedo, Mato Grosso, following a diagnosis of digestive tract cancer. The Raoni Institute confirmed that medical teams have opted for palliative care due to his advanced age and the high risks associated with aggressive oncological treatments like chemotherapy.
Earlier in 2026, the Kayapó leader faced several health complications, including a severe intestinal obstruction. In June, he was emergently transferred to São Paulo, where he underwent a gastroenteroanastomosis surgery at Hospital São Paulo (Unifesp) to restore food passage and alleviate symptoms. Subsequent laboratory tests confirmed the presence of a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma.
His current home care regimen focuses on pain management, comfort, and quality of life, including nursing, physiotherapy, and nutritional monitoring. The treatment plan follows an intercultural approach, integrating Western medicine with the spiritual traditions of the Mẽbêngôkre people, allowing trusted shamans to provide spiritual support alongside medical professionals.
