Rapa Nui and Sernapesca sign marine protection agreement

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) and the Municipality of Rapa Nui have signed a cooperation agreement to enhance environmental protection and marine fauna care on the island.

The agreement establishes a framework for information exchange and improved coordination during emergencies, such as marine animal strandings or cases requiring immediate rescue. Under the pact, Sernapesca will provide training to municipal staff to improve emergency response capabilities. Additionally, the municipality will provide land for the final disposal of animals that die or strand lifeless on the island.

Gonzalo Rojas, acting regional director of Sernapesca Valparaíso, stated that the collaboration is a significant step toward protecting marine species and the island's ecosystem by multiplying the number of prepared teams available to assist in emergencies.
