Rapeseed Prices Surge in Europe Amid French Heatwave and Yield Concerns
A severe heatwave across France, with temperatures reaching 42 °C, has raised worries about lower rapeseed yields and reduced oil content in the late growth stage. The market reaction saw August Paris futures climb to about €518 per tonne before easing to around €512 per tonne, underscoring sensitivity to weather news.
EU analysts have cut the overall rapeseed harvest forecast from 20.6 Mt to 20.3 Mt, while French production is expected to fall short of the multi‑year average. Similar temperature spikes are reported in Ukraine (~36 °C), adding to regional supply pressures. Canadian canola prices remain stable near CA$735 per tonne.
In Poland, industry experts anticipate 2026/27 rapeseed prices in the €480‑€520 per tonne range, comparable to current levels, and warn of a potentially poor season with yields projected around 3 t/ha. The broader European market also notes rising output in Germany and Romania, which could influence export dynamics, but overall sentiment remains cautious as weather‑related risks dominate the commodity outlook.
