Raphael Garcia completes solo rowing crossing of the Atlantic
Raphael Garcia, a 34-year-old electrical engineer, has completed a solo rowing expedition across the Atlantic Ocean, traveling from Lüderitz, Namibia, to Brazil. The journey lasted 136 days aboard a six-meter boat.
Inspired by Amyr Klink’s historic crossing 42 years ago, Garcia underwent two years of rigorous preparation. His training was interrupted for nine months due to a shoulder injury, but he utilized a weekly self-assessment system to rebuild his physical conditioning.
During the voyage, Garcia faced significant dangers, including encounters with large cargo ships and whales. To avoid collisions, he had to wake every 20 minutes to scan the horizon, particularly when his Automatic Identification System (AIS) experienced issues during a storm.
