Raphaël Glucksmann announces 2027 French presidential candidacy
Raphaël Glucksmann, leader of the centre-left movement Place Publique and a Member of the European Parliament, has officially announced his candidacy for the 2027 French presidential election. Making the announcement during a TF1 news broadcast, Glucksmann stated his intention to “rebuild France” and expressed concern regarding the rise of the far right.
To secure a unified left-wing front, Glucksmann intends to participate in social-democratic primaries organized by the Socialist Party and Place Publique, scheduled for October. He has indicated that if he wins the primary, he will not seek alliances with Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s La France Insoumise. His platform includes increasing workers' net income by reducing social levies, funded by higher taxes on the wealthiest 1% and large inheritances, as well as a rescue plan for public education.
In the media, the announcement has immediate consequences: journalist Léa Salamé, Glucksmann's partner, is stepping back from her role as the presenter of France 2’s 20:00 news to avoid potential conflicts of interest.
Currently, Glucksmann holds between 10% and 12% in opinion polls, positioning him as a leading figure in the social-democratic space, though he trails Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who holds approximately 15%.
