Rapper Xamã awarded Medalha Tiradentes and appointed hip‑hop professor at Rio’s UERJ

Brazilian rapper, actor and poet Xamã was honored with the Medalha Tiradentes, the highest distinction granted by the Assembleia Legislativa do Rio de Janeiro (Alerj). The intimate ceremony took place in the backyard of his grandmother’s house in Sepetiba and was presented by state deputy Dani Monteiro, who praised Xamã for taking Rio’s rap culture nationwide while staying rooted in his origins.

Following the award, Xamã will join the Universidade do Hip‑Hop, a program created in partnership with the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). He told TVZ Ao Vivo that he feels “nervous” but excited to teach, noting that the initiative aims to give artistic, cultural and intellectual training to young people who want to pursue rap careers. The project will also feature MC Marechal and DK47 as guest instructors.
