Raquel Bonilla appointed Veracruz Secretary of Education amid political criticism

Raquel Bonilla Herrera, a substitute senator, was named the new Secretary of Education for the state of Veracruz. The appointment was announced by Governor Rocío Nahle García as part of a cabinet reshuffle following the return of Claudia Tello Espinosa to the Senate.

The teachers’ union SNTE Section 32, representing around 100,000 educators in Veracruz, publicly endorsed Bonilla’s designation, stating it will foster dialogue with the state's teaching community and maintain collaboration on educational programs. Conversely, the state branch of the National Action Party (PAN) denounced the choice, arguing that Bonilla lacks experience in education and is a political operative. PAN officials highlighted the poor educational outcomes in Veracruz, noting that a significant portion of the population remains illiterate or without complete primary education, and cited ongoing issues such as unpaid teachers and alleged financial irregularities at the Universidad Popular Autónoma de Veracruz.
