Rare Czechoslovak Tuzex voucher fetches over €50,000 at auction

A 50‑halier voucher issued by the former Czechoslovak Tuzex stores on 18 September 1959 sold at a 2022 auction for more than €50,000. The voucher, originally valued at 10,000 Czech korunas (about €400), attracted collectors because of its age, low issue number, scarcity and condition. Tuzex vouchers were special coupons used to buy imported and otherwise scarce goods in state‑run Tuzex shops during the socialist era. After the shops closed, the vouchers lost any purchasing power but became prized collectibles, with prices driven by factors such as issue year, series, remaining copies, provenance and paper quality. The recent sale set a record for this particular issue, highlighting growing interest in Cold‑War‑era memorabilia.
