Rare Harry Potter first edition sells for $400,000
A rare first edition of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ has sold for approximately $400,000 (£302,000) at Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas. The hardback copy is one of only 500 produced in this specific printing.
This particular edition is highly sought after by collectors due to several typographical errors. Notable mistakes include the repetition of the words ‘one wand’ on page 53, the misspelling of ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ on the back cover, and the author’s name appearing as ‘Joanne Rowling’ instead of J.K. Rowling.
The sale significantly exceeded its pre-sale estimate of £75,000, driven by a booming market for Harry Potter memorabilia. Of the original 500 copies, 300 were distributed to schools and libraries, while the remaining 200 were sent to reviewers and personal contacts.
