Nintendo’s Rare Famicombox Found Operating in Japanese Love Hotel

A video‑game historian identified several fully functional Famicombox consoles – a commercial version of Nintendo’s 1986 NES – installed in the rooms of a Japanese love hotel. The black‑cased units, designed for hourly‑rental hotels, allow guests to select from up to 16 cartridges via an on‑screen menu. Most cartridges still run, though the Zapper light‑gun accessory no longer works with the hotel’s LCD televisions.

The find revives long‑standing rumors that Nintendo once operated such hotels in the 1960s, a claim first popularised in David Sheff’s 1993 book *Game Over*. Financial records reviewed by historians, including the discoverer known as Orochi, show no evidence that Nintendo ever ran love‑hotel businesses, making the operational consoles a rare glimpse into a little‑known venture of the company’s early days.
