Rare nutcrackers spotted in Rheden, Netherlands
Dozens of birdwatchers have gathered in Rheden, near the Veluwezoom, to catch a glimpse of the rare red-billed nutcracker. This Siberian bird is seldom seen in the Netherlands, making its recent appearance a significant event for local enthusiasts.
Vogelbescherming Nederland reports that approximately thirty nutcrackers have been observed in Northeast Netherlands. This represents a rare occurrence where so many of these birds are seen in the country simultaneously, a phenomenon described by experts as ‘nutcracker fever.’
Observers noted that the birds appeared to migrate from the Baltic states through Sweden and Germany before reaching the Netherlands. Experts suggest that while the nutcracker is not typically a migratory bird, food shortages can trigger such movements during the autumn months. The specific species identified is the slender-billed nutcracker, distinct from the thick-billed varieties found in the Ardennes, Vosges, and Alps.
