Rare postage stamps reach multi-million dollar values
In the world of high-end philately, certain postage stamps have become multi-million dollar assets comparable to fine art and rare jewels. Their value is driven by rarity, printing errors, provenance, and condition.
One of the most valuable philatelic items is China’s ‘Red Revenue’ from the Qing Dynasty. A complex piece consisting of a block of four 1897 Red Revenue stamps combined with a sheet of 25 5-candarin Large Dragon stamps sold for $17.4 million in 2009. Only one copy of this specific four-stamp block is known to exist.
Another legendary item is the ‘Ball Cover’ from Mauritius. This 1847 envelope features the famous one-penny red ‘Post Office’ stamp. Sold in June 2021 by the auction house Christoph Gärtner, the item fetched a total price of approximately $11.2 million (including buyer’s premium). It is one of only three known Ball Covers, and the only one held in private hands.
