Rare poultry breeds command high prices in global markets

High-value poultry breeds, including racing pigeons and rare chickens, have reached extraordinary market prices due to rarity and specialized traits.

In the world of racing pigeons, the Belgian-based auction platform Pigeon Paradise (PIPA) facilitates high-stakes sales. The record for the most expensive racing pigeon was set in 2020 by a female named ‘Noua Kim’, which sold for 1.6 million euros to a Chinese buyer using the pseudonym ‘Super Duper’. This bird had previously been recognized as the best young pigeon in Belgium in 2018.

Similarly, the Ayam Cemani chicken breed from Java, Indonesia, commands premium prices. Characterized by a genetic mutation that makes their feathers, skin, organs, and meat entirely black, these birds are extremely rare, with an estimated global population of only 3,500. Live adult specimens can cost up to 3,000 dollars, while sets of six eggs can cost nearly 100 dollars.
