Ras Kuuku recounts childhood hardships before music fame

Ghanaian reggae-dancehall musician Ras Kuuku, born Kojo Kurankye, has shared details regarding his difficult upbringing in Accra before achieving musical success. Following the early death of his mother, he was raised by his aunt in Dome.

To support himself while pursuing his education, Kuuku engaged in petty trading, selling items such as food, rubber bags, and ‘pure water’. He noted that while his aunt required him to work, she also prioritized his schooling. His educational journey included moving from Dome to Nungua Presby and even repeating a grade to remain in the same class as his cousin.

Before finding fame in the music industry, Kuuku’s primary ambition was to become a professional footballer, a pursuit he took seriously as a talented bowler. Ultimately, it was music that transformed his circumstances and established him as a notable figure in Ghana’s reggae-dancehall scene.
