Ras Malé waterfront deal faces Maldives Supreme Court challenge

A constitutional case has been filed at the Supreme Court of the Maldives to halt a waterfront development agreement between the government and UAE-based developer Eagle Hills. The project, known as the Ras Malé waterfront and marina development, involves approximately 500 hectares of reclaimed state land.

The dispute centers on the terms of the agreement, which remain undisclosed to the public. Legal challenges allege that the deal may breach constitutional provisions regarding state property and foreign leases. While the government maintains that the land remains state property, the developer proposes offering properties through leases of up to 99 years. The project is intended to include hotels, resorts, residences, and various public facilities.
