Brazil presidential election impacts Chinese investment in Camaçari
The upcoming presidential election in Brazil, contested by Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro, carries significant implications for the country's geopolitical alignment and industrial landscape. A key focal point is the city of Camaçari, where the Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has established its largest factory outside of China.
The BYD complex, which occupies the site of a former Ford manufacturing plant, currently employs 8,500 people and is projected to exceed 10,000 employees next year. This expansion makes BYD one of the largest private employers in the state of Bahia. While local labor unions have welcomed the Chinese investment, the political outcome remains uncertain; a victory for Flávio Bolsonaro could potentially create obstacles for such foreign investments and shift Brazil's economic relationship away from China and toward the United States.
