National Rally proposes fines for wearing the veil in France
The National Rally (RN) has reaffirmed its intention to ban the wearing of the Islamic veil in public spaces and impose financial penalties on violators if the party wins the 2027 French presidential election. RN MP Jean-Philippe Tanguy stated that the measure is intended to combat 'Islamist ideology' and claimed the proposal is supported by 60 to 70 percent of French citizens.
Tanguy compared the proposed fines to penalties for not wearing a seatbelt in a vehicle. To address potential constitutional challenges regarding religious freedom, Marine Le Pen has suggested that the policy be implemented through a national referendum.
The proposal has drawn sharp criticism from across the political spectrum. The France Islam Council (CFCM) called the statements 'extremely irresponsible,' arguing they stigmatize Muslim women. Left-wing leaders and anti-racism watchdogs have labeled the plan Islamophobic, while conservative candidate Bruno Retailleau dismissed it as 'populism' and 'demagoguery,' arguing it is legally inapplicable and a poor use of police resources.
