Rassie Erasmus faces scrutiny over Springbok selection tactics

Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus is facing scrutiny regarding his management of team selections and communication ahead of the second Test against the All Blacks in Cape Town. Following a 33-16 defeat in the opening match, Erasmus implemented several late changes to the South African squad, including the promotion of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu to fly-half after Handre Pollard suffered a calf injury. The timing of these announcements, which occurred after the All Blacks had finalized their lineup, has led to accusations of playing mind games to keep the opposition guessing.

Separately, the context of Erasmus’s coaching style is being viewed through the lens of his 2021 misconduct ban. During the British & Irish Lions tour, Erasmus was suspended for two months after releasing a video criticizing referee Nic Berry. In response to such incidents, World Rugby has since implemented stricter processes to protect match officials from public criticism and limited the ways coaches can communicate concerns directly with referees.
