Rassvet satellite project targeted in Samara missile strike
Russia is developing the Rassvet (Dawn) satellite constellation, a project intended to provide secure battlefield communications, Arctic coverage, and technological independence from foreign systems. Often compared to Starlink, the project has seen the launch of two Soyuz-2.1b rockets from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in early 2026, each deploying 16 satellites.
On August 15, 2026, Ukrainian long-range Flamingo missiles targeted industrial facilities in Samara, specifically striking a building at the Progress Rocket and Space Center. The strike hit a factory used for assembling the Soyuz rockets required to launch the Rassvet satellites. Analysts suggest that because Ukraine lacks direct anti-satellite missile capabilities, targeting the ground-based launch infrastructure is a strategic alternative to intercepting satellites already in orbit.
