Rastriya Swatantra Party faces internal scrutiny amid leadership absences

Internal tensions have surfaced within Nepal’s ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) following the absence of Prime Minister Balendra Shah from a crucial Central Committee meeting. The meeting, held in Kathmandu, was intended to discuss preparations for upcoming local-level elections.

Shah’s absence, as he traveled toward Mustang via Pokhara, has fueled speculation regarding his relationship with RSP Chair Rabi Lamichhane. Some party leaders have expressed concerns that Shah lacks faith in the party system, noting his rare appearances at the party’s central office since joining.

In a separate address to party members during a leadership workshop, Rabi Lamichhane urged leaders to uphold democratic institutions and avoid actions that could bring the party into disrepute. Lamichhane emphasized the need for the RSP to focus on long-term planning for the next 35 years rather than dwelling on past political grievances.
