Rat infestation reported in Zugló district of Budapest
Residents in Budapest's XIV district, particularly around Ilka Street in Zugló, are reporting a severe rat infestation. According to local accounts, rodents have appeared in apartment building courtyards, hallways, and even in trees, causing significant distress and fear among inhabitants. Some residents report having to clean rat excrement from communal areas daily.
Biologist Gábor Földvári has highlighted potential health risks, including the spread of pathogens such as hantaviruses. While residents have attempted individual pest control measures, they report these efforts have been ineffective.
The responsibility for rat eradication in the capital lies with the Budapest Municipality, with work being carried out by Budapesti Közművek since June 2025. The municipality provides a reporting platform for sightings, with a mandate for specialists to respond within 48 to 72 hours. Potential causes for the surge include the neglected Rákosrendező area and concerns regarding the maintenance of the local sewage network.
