Ratko Mladić, convicted Bosnian Serb war criminal, dies in prison

Ratko Mladić, the former military leader of the Bosnian Serbs convicted of war crimes and genocide, has died in prison at The Hague at the age of 84.

Mladić was a central figure during the Bosnian War (1992–1995), where he commanded the forces of the Republika Srpska. He is widely recognized as a primary perpetrator of the Srebrenica genocide in July 1995, which resulted in the massacre of over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys, marking the worst atrocity in Europe since World War II.

Additionally, Mladić orchestrated the nearly four-year siege of Sarajevo, the longest siege of a capital city in modern warfare history. His actions were characterized by the targeting of non-Serb populations, a process often referred to as ethnic cleansing. Following his conviction, he was serving a life sentence for crimes against humanity and genocide.
