Ratko Mladić death investigation launched by UN Mechanism

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Ratko Mladić while in detention. Judge Ian Bonomi has been tasked with conducting the inquiry, with details regarding the death remaining confidential until the investigation is complete.

The Mechanism stated that handling Mladić’s remains is currently a confidential matter and no decision has been made regarding the transfer of his body. While Mladić’s family and Serbian officials had requested humanitarian release to allow for treatment in Serbia, the Mechanism maintained that the medical care provided in the Hague detention hospital exceeded international standards and that his proximity to death did not necessitate release.

Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujić stated that Serbia is prepared to receive Mladić’s body and will ensure a dignified funeral in accordance with his family’s wishes. Vujić noted that Serbian authorities are seeking answers regarding Mladić’s treatment protocols, questioning whether certain therapies were discontinued prior to his death, and has requested that the investigation include a review of his medical care.
