Ratko Mladić funeral in Belgrade draws official presence

Convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić was buried in Belgrade this week following his death in The Hague, where he was serving a life sentence for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. The funeral at Topčidersko Cemetery featured military honors, a military band, and a coffin draped in the Serbian flag.

While the Serbian government, led by President Aleksandar Vučić, has denied that the event was an official state funeral, evidence suggests significant state involvement. Mladić’s remains were transported from The Hague via a government aircraft, and the ceremony was attended by government ministers, including Minister of Justice Nenad Vujić, and Patriarch Porfirije of the Serbian Orthodox Church. President Vučić’s son, Danilo Vučić, was also in attendance.

The commemorations, which drew thousands of supporters, have reignited intense debate regarding accountability and reconciliation in the Balkans. Critics argue that the public honoring of the man responsible for the Srebrenica genocide and the siege of Sarajevo highlights a profound value gap between Serbia and the European Union.
