Ratko Mladić, the former commander of the Army of the Republika Srpska, has died at the age of 84 while serving a life sentence in a United Nations detention center in The Hague. His death follows a period of significant health decline, including multiple strokes.

Mladić was convicted in 2017, with the verdict upheld in 2021, for genocide in Srebrenica, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. His convictions included responsibility for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys, as well as the siege of Sarajevo.

Prior to his death, the defense had requested his release on humanitarian grounds to receive palliative care in Serbia, but the request was rejected by Judge Graciela Gatica Santana. Serbian Minister of Justice Nenad Vujic stated that Mladić will be buried with full military and state honors, pending coordination with the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals.
