Ratko Mladić's death highlights deep divisions in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The death of Ratko Mladić has highlighted the profound political and social divisions within Bosnia and Herzegovina. Aleksandar Vranješ, the Bosnian Ambassador to Serbia, stated that the situation confirms the country is deeply and perhaps irreparably divided due to conflicting perspectives on the war, its symbols, and its events.

Vranješ noted that even professional consensus is impossible because the conflict is viewed as a civil war from a Serbian perspective and as aggression from a Bosniak perspective. He observed that these radicalized views are already being passed down to younger generations, who often express even more extreme stances via social media than those who lived through the war.

Historical context regarding the relationship between Mladić and Milorad Dodik remains a point of reference. In December 2015, Dodik testified in Mladić's defense at the Hague Tribunal, an event marked by a military salute from Mladić to Dodik, symbolizing their shared commitment to the establishment and defense of Republika Srpska.
