Ratko Mladić, the former commander of the Army of the Republika Srpska, has died in a detention center in The Hague. He was 84 years old at the time of his death. Mladić had been serving a life sentence following his 2021 conviction for genocide in Srebrenica, as well as war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the siege of Sarajevo.

His death occurred while he was receiving palliative care in the prison hospital. Reports indicate that Mladić had suffered multiple strokes in recent years, which significantly worsened his health. His family and medical professionals had made several requests for his release on humanitarian grounds to allow him to receive treatment in Serbia, but these requests were repeatedly rejected by Judge Graciela Gatica Santana. The court ruled that the interests of justice and the level of care provided in The Hague did not justify early release, even in anticipation of death.

Mladić, often referred to as the ‘Butcher of the Balkans,’ was a central figure in the Bosnian War. He was convicted for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys, and for orchestrating a campaign of terror against civilians in Sarajevo.
