Rattlesnake biology and the risks of relocation

Rattlesnakes, members of the genus Crotalus and the pit viper family, are characterized by keratin rattles that add segments during skin shedding. These snakes use their rattles as a warning signal to predators and possess heat-sensing pits to detect infrared radiation from warm-blooded prey.

As ambush predators, rattlesnakes rely on specific home ranges for hunting, hibernation sites, and shelter. Because of this deep connection to their territory, relocating rattlesnakes from residential areas to new environments can be detrimental. Displacement often leads to a loss of familiar food sources and social structures, significantly reducing their chances of survival.
