Ratzeburg supermarket attack leaves one woman dead
A 48-year-old woman was killed during a knife attack at a Lidl supermarket in Ratzeburg, Germany, on Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 3:35 PM in the Bahnhofsallee location.
According to investigators, a 44-year-old German man allegedly attacked the woman suddenly and indiscriminately while she was standing between the aisles. Witnesses reported that the victim and the suspect did not know each other. Three bystanders intervened to assist the woman and managed to overpower and disarm the attacker.
During the struggle, the suspect reportedly turned the knife on himself, sustaining serious injuries. He was subsequently taken to the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein in Lübeck for treatment. The Lübeck Public Prosecutor's Office and the homicide commission are investigating the incident on suspicion of murder.
Police have cordoned off the area around the supermarket and stated there is no ongoing danger to the public. Investigators are currently examining whether the suspect was in a state of acute psychological distress and are working to establish a motive.
