Raul Fernandez secures podium in Indonesia despite broken fingers
Raul Fernandez secured a second-place podium finish at the Indonesian Grand Prix despite competing with two broken fingers. The injuries occurred during a collision with Marco Bezzecchi during the previous day's Sprint race.
The injury specifically affected his right index finger, which is vital for operating the brake lever on his Trackhouse Racing Aprilia. To compete, Fernandez had to adapt his riding technique in record time, utilizing his middle finger to manage braking instead.
Fernandez credited the MotoGP medical staff, led by Dr. Angel Charte, for providing the specialized taping and support necessary to keep his fingers stable on the handlebars. Although he led the race for approximately one-third of the distance, physical fatigue and the difficulty of the new braking technique eventually allowed Bezzecchi to overtake him. The weekend resulted in a 1-2 finish for Aprilia riders.
