Raven-Symoné clarifies remarks regarding 'That's So Raven' racial identity
Actress Raven-Symoné has addressed recent controversy surrounding her comments about the racial identity of the characters in the Disney Channel series 'That's So Raven'. During an episode of the 'Tea Time with Raven & Miranda' podcast, she spoke with former co-star Kyle Massey to clarify her previous exchange with comedian Kalen Allen.
The controversy stemmed from a clip where Raven-Symoné questioned why Allen characterized the protagonist, Raven Baxter, so strongly through the lens of race. She had previously asked, “Was she Black? Why did she feel Black to you?” and suggested that the show's themes could be viewed as universal by imagining the characters without color.
Raven-Symoné clarified that she has always considered the Baxter family to be Black and acknowledged the significance of being the first Black female lead with her name in the title. She explained that her intention was to highlight the show's universal appeal, noting that while viewers saw a Black family, people from many different cultures could still see themselves in the characters.
