Raven-Symoné faces backlash over comments on character's race

Actress Raven-Symoné is facing significant social media backlash following the resurfacing of a clip from her podcast, ‘Tea Time with Raven & Miranda’. During an April 10 episode featuring guest Kalen Allen, the conversation turned to the cultural impact of the Disney Channel sitcom ‘That’s So Raven’.

When Allen described the character Raven Baxter as being deeply Black and noted the importance of seeing a Black family on television, Symoné questioned the necessity of race in the character's relatability. She suggested that the character’s identity was universal, asking Allen to ‘take away the color’ and imagine the characters as green to see if the essence remained. Her wife, Miranda Maday, also contributed to the discussion by noting the show’s white writers.

Fans have reacted strongly, arguing that the character and show held specific cultural significance for Black audiences. The controversy has escalated, with Kalen Allen reporting that he has received death threats due to the viral debate.
