Ravenna breakwater project begins with placement of first caisson
The first of 18 concrete caissons has been positioned to form a breakwater protecting the FSRU ‘BW Singapore’ regasification plant off the coast of Ravenna, Italy. The project, valued at over 200 million euros, aims to protect the vessel from adverse weather conditions to ensure the continuous operation of the facility.
The breakwater will span approximately 900 meters. The construction is being carried out by a consortium led by RCM Costruzioni in partnership with the Spanish group Acciona. The caissons, measuring 53 by 22 meters, are prefabricated in the Port of Ravenna using the ‘Kugira Dos’ floating dock.
The installation process involved towing the module approximately six miles via the Candiano Channel using tugboats and mooring vessels. The caisson was precisely placed on a stone foundation at a depth of 17 meters, a process monitored by GNSS satellite systems and supported by divers. The project is expected to be completed by late 2027.
