Ravenna marks 100 years of energy history and transition
Eni is celebrating the centenary of Agip in Ravenna, marking a century of energy development in the region. The city has been central to Italy's energy history, from the 1952 discovery of the ‘Ravenna Terra’ field to the 1960 launch of ‘Ravenna Mare’, Europe’s first true offshore well.
Today, Ravenna serves as an integrated industrial hub for Eni. Key operations include gas extraction and treatment via the Northern Central District, power generation through Enipower, and research into renewable materials by Versalis. A major strategic focus is the ‘Ravenna CCS’ project, a national hub designed for carbon capture and storage using depleted gas fields to sequester industrial emissions.
In a separate local development, the Democratic Party in Ravenna has raised concerns regarding environmental compensation measures related to Enel’s expansion of the Teodora thermoelectric plant in Porto Corsini. Local officials are debating how compensation funds should be allocated to ensure they provide direct benefits to the communities hosting significant energy infrastructure.
