Ravensong Aquatic Centre to undergo $13.5M renovation
The Regional District of Nanaimo has announced a $13.5 million renovation project for the Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach. Scheduled to begin in fall 2027, the project aims to upgrade the aging facility's mechanical systems, energy efficiency, and accessibility.
Funding for the project includes $7 million from the federal government’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program and $6.5 million from the centre’s capital reserve fund. The upgrades are expected to reduce annual energy use by approximately 47.5 per cent and greenhouse gas emissions by 83.9 per cent, resulting in estimated annual energy savings of $22,000.
Planned improvements include upgrades to heating, filtration, and pump systems, as well as measures to increase resilience against climate-related risks. To improve safety and accessibility, the project will involve replacing pool deck tiles, regrading deck slopes, and upgrading the lobby and changerooms. The facility, which opened in 1995, is the most used indoor recreation center in the area but has faced capacity challenges since 2006.
