Ravintola Nuppu ordered to close due to sewage flooding
Ravintola Nuppu, a Mediterranean lunch restaurant located in the Kallio district of Helsinki, has been ordered to close indefinitely due to severe hygiene issues. The closure follows repeated incidents where sewage from the building's plumbing system flooded the restaurant's premises, including the bar area and customer spaces.
According to the Helsinki Food Safety Unit, inspections conducted in July and September revealed that wastewater, containing toilet paper and other waste, had contaminated surfaces that come into contact with food. Although the operator, Kumari Oy, proactively reported the issue and closed the restaurant in July, subsequent inspections showed that sewage had flooded the premises multiple times even after initial warnings.
While the building's housing company has reported that the primary sewage line defect has been repaired, officials stated that the restaurant's furniture, equipment, and surfaces remain contaminated with microbes. The food safety unit determined that the conditions pose a serious risk to human health, prohibiting the preparation and distribution of food until the premises are thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and repaired.
