Rawalakot protests turn deadly following alleged security force firing

Protests in Rawalakot, Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), have escalated following reports of security forces opening fire on demonstrators. The Human Rights Council PoJK reported that the incident, which occurred at Umer Farooq Chowk, resulted in the death of a youth named Saiyam Liaqat and injuries to several others.

The Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has called for civil disobedience, including the refusal to pay taxes and utility bills. Protesters are demanding the withdrawal of the Pakistani Army and paramilitary forces from the region, citing United Nations resolutions. While the JAAC maintains that the movement has been peaceful, local police have alleged that protesters fired upon personnel.

In addition to the shooting, locals have accused security forces of looting belongings from homes. The Human Rights Council PoJK has called for an independent and transparent judicial investigation into the deaths and injuries, noting unverified reports that nearly 100 people have lost their lives in the region since June 5.
