Rawson court recognizes 23 rescued animals as sentient beings

A court in Rawson, Chubut, has recognized 23 animals rescued from a local farm as sentient beings with their own legal protections. The ruling, issued by Criminal Judge Eve Ponce, follows a request by Chief Prosecutor Florencia Gómez of the Specialized Unit in Environmental Matters (UFEAyDA).

The animals were rescued in June during raids on a farm where they were found in conditions of severe overcrowding, surrounded by excrement, and lacking sufficient food, water, and vaccinations. Reports indicated various health issues, including respiratory and neurological problems, as well as the presence of decomposing animal carcasses at the site.

Judge Ponce ruled that the animals will permanently remain with the families who have assumed responsible ownership of them. The prosecution's case was based on national and provincial animal protection laws, as well as constitutional environmental protections.
