Ray Dalio warns of U.S. debt crisis, recommends gold and Bitcoin

Billionaire investor and Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio has warned that the United States is approaching a critical inflection point in its long-term debt cycle. With U.S. federal debt recently surpassing $40 trillion, Dalio suggests a sovereign debt crisis could materialize within approximately three years, plus or minus two, unless significant fiscal changes are made.

Dalio recommends that investors adopt a defensive posture by underweighting debt-based assets like bonds and instead overweighting gold and maintaining a small allocation to Bitcoin. He specifically suggests that a 10% to 15% allocation to gold can help mitigate portfolio risk during periods of economic uncertainty and currency devaluation.

The warning follows the U.S. Treasury's announcement to expand its debt buyback program, which Dalio interprets as a sign of mounting fiscal pressure rather than a simple technical management tool. He notes that the current trajectory—characterized by high deficits and rising interest rates—is also being mirrored in other major economies, including the United Kingdom, China, the European Union, and Japan. To stabilize the fiscal path, Dalio advocates for reducing the federal budget deficit from approximately 6% to 3% of GDP through structural spending cuts, increased revenue, and moderated interest rates.
