British singer Raye has won the Mercury Prize for her second studio album, This Music May Contain Hope. The award ceremony, held at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, marks the first time since 1994 that a pop album has secured the prize.
Following the announcement, the album has experienced a significant surge in consumption, with chart sales increasing by 274.7%. It has climbed to number 11 in the midweek albums chart. Raye’s single, ‘Where Is My Husband!’, also saw a rise to number 31 in the midweek singles chart.
Other nominees also saw streaming increases, including Jade, whose album ‘That’s Showbiz, Baby!’ saw a 476% increase in streams. The Mercury Prize is designed to recognize the best British or Irish album of the year, prioritizing artistic innovation over commercial trends.
