Raytheon expands global export push for AN/SPY-6 radar

Raytheon is expanding the international export of its AN/SPY-6(V) S-band Air and Missile Defense Radar (AMDR) family. The company is targeting key frigate programs in Germany, Japan, and Denmark. Germany has already selected the system for its new F127 air defense frigates, while Japan is evaluating the radar for its Mogami-class frigates.

The radar's modular architecture allows it to be scaled into different sizes to meet various mission requirements. Raytheon aims to establish a global manufacturing and sustainment ecosystem similar to its existing model for the Patriot ground-based air defense system.

In a recent demonstration, the SPY-6 radar was utilized aboard the USS Jack H. Lucas, the U.S. Navy’s first Flight III destroyer, during the Pacific Dragon 2026 multilateral exercise. The exercise, conducted off Hawaii, involved forces from Australia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Chile, and Spain. The radar is designed to detect and track ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles, as well as hostile aircraft and surface ships, to enhance integrated air and missile defense at sea.
