Raziye Akyol honored with street name in Muğla
A street in the Akçaova neighborhood of Menteşe, Muğla, has been named after Raziye Akyol to honor her legacy as Turkey’s first female muhtar (neighborhood head). Akyol served in this role from 1913 to 1923, a period before women held formal suffrage in the country.
Local officials noted that Akyol took on the leadership role during a time when no suitable men were available to serve. She was remembered for her community support, including assisting orphans of war veterans.
While Akyol served prior to the declaration of the Republic, historical records distinguish her from Gül Esin, who is recognized as the first woman to be elected to the position following the granting of women's right to vote and be elected in 1933.
