Razorpay launches Vulcan, an AI-powered payments foundation model

Fintech company Razorpay has launched Vulcan, described as India’s first transformer-based AI foundation model built specifically for the payments sector. Developed in collaboration with NVIDIA and Amazon Web Services (AWS), the proprietary model is designed to optimize transaction routing, reduce payment failures, and enhance security within India’s digital economy.

According to Razorpay, the model was trained on approximately 3 trillion data points across 4 billion payments, learning from roughly 3,000 signals per transaction. The company reported that early deployment of Vulcan’s components has already yielded measurable results, including an 8-10% improvement in payment success rates and an eightfold increase in the detection and prevention of international card fraud.

Additionally, the technology has identified five times more fraudulent or disputed transactions without increasing the volume of alerts. On its Magic Checkout platform, the model enabled 40% more shoppers to access their preferred UPI applications, contributing to an additional 100,000 to 200,000 purchases per month.
