RB Leipzig’s ‘Buy Cheap, Sell High’ Model Yields €400 Million Revenue

RB Leipzig has turned a decade‑old transfer strategy into a lucrative business model, generating more than €400 million in sales and roughly €250 million in profit from five high‑profile deals involving Yan Diomande, Josko Gvardiol, Benjamin Sesko, Dominik Szoboszlai and Dani Olmo. The club, promoted to the Bundesliga ten years ago under the guidance of Ralf Rangnick, scouts young players – typically under 24 – from leagues in France, Austria, Croatia and the Nordics, develops them for its high‑pressing “Gegenpressing” system, and then sells them at a substantial markup.

Leipzig’s approach has yielded more than a billion euros in total transfer income since promotion, with a net gain of about €300 million over ten years after reinvesting €604 million in new signings. The latest prospect, Diomande, was bought for €20 million and is expected to fetch over €130 million from Real Madrid, exemplifying the club’s “buy cheap, sell high” cycle that sustains squad quality while securing Champions League spots.
